How a Solar Installation Runs From Design to Permission to Operate

A solar installation runs in order through a consultation, system design, permitting, installation, inspection and activation, and then monitoring. The seven steps are listed below in the order they happen.

  1. Consultation

The project starts with a consultation that looks at the home's energy use and what the roof can carry, so the system is designed for the house rather than picked off a catalog.

  2. Design

The system is laid out in modeling software to get the most production from the roof while keeping the array looking right from the street.

  3. Permitting

The permits are pulled and the compliance paperwork handled before anything goes on the roof. A permit left open becomes the homeowner's problem when the house is sold, so every permit is closed out at the end.

  4. Installation

Flashed mounts and racking go on first, then the panels, the inverter and the wiring back to the electrical panel.

  5. Inspection

The final inspection follows the install as part of the same sequence, and nothing is switched on until it passes.

  6. Activation

After the utility's sign-off, "permission to operate" in the trade, the system is commissioned and switched on.

  7. Monitoring

From then on you watch production in an app and book annual maintenance, and the system keeps working while you do nothing at all.

Interconnection and Net Metering With the Utility

Once the inspection passes, the interconnection application is filed with the utility, and net metering then credits the power the system sends to the grid against your bill. A meter exchange follows so the system is authorized to operate, and FPL's net metering page explains how that credit is applied each month.

Solar Panels, Inverters, Racking and Batteries

A solar panel system is built from photovoltaic panels, an inverter that converts their power for the home, the racking that holds them and, when backup is wanted, a battery. The parts of a solar panel system are listed below.

  • Photovoltaic (PV) panels

Built from photovoltaic cells that turn sunlight into direct current. Some panels use heterojunction, "HJT", silicon cells for higher efficiency.

  • String inverter

One central inverter for a whole series of panels, usually mounted on a wall by the meter or in the garage.

  • Microinverters

A small inverter under each panel, so one failed unit cuts output without shutting the whole system down.

    solar inverter types
  • Racking

The rails and attachments that hold the panels to the roof, with flashing at each attachment so the roof stays sealed.

  • Battery

Stores surplus power for use after dark or through an outage, when backup is wanted.

  • Monitoring

The app that shows what the system is producing, day by day, from the moment it is switched on.

What Palm Beach Gardens Owners Weigh Before Going Solar

Owners in Palm Beach Gardens weigh the cost, the warranties, how the system stands up to hurricanes and where the panels can go before they buy, the same questions the U.S. Department of Energy's homeowner's guide to solar walks through. The four we hear most are listed below, each answered in short.

Solar Panel Cost and Financing

A solar panel system's price depends on its size, the roof type, your energy usage and what the property itself needs, and a firm figure comes only after a site survey. The survey looks at the roof's condition, the electrical service, the equipment chosen and the permitting, so call for a free estimate rather than trusting a number off a web page.

Panel, Inverter and Workmanship Warranties

Panels, inverters and the installer's workmanship each carry a separate warranty with its own term: typically 25 years on panel performance, 10 to 12 years on the panel itself and 5 to 12 years on the inverter. The workmanship warranty is the installer's own and covers the install rather than the hardware, so ask who stands behind each before you sign.

Solar Panels Built for Hurricane Winds

Yes, panels and racking are rated and engineered for hurricane-force design winds. Panels use impact-resistant glass and are tested to withstand winds of 130 mph or more, and the racking is what holds them to the roof through a storm.

Ground-Mount, Carport and Condo Solar

Besides rooftop arrays, panels go on a ground mount, a carport or a boat port, and on condo buildings the association board decides. The places panels can go besides a house roof are listed below.

  • Ground mount: an array on its own frame in the yard instead of on the roof.
  • Carport: panels overhead that can also power an electric car parked beneath.
  • Boat port: the same arrangement over a boat lift, powering the boat.
  • Condo common areas: condo solar usually powers common areas rather than individual units, and the association board controls the roof space and the decision.
