Solar Roofer Work on Palm Beach Gardens Roofs

We mount solar panels on tile, shingle and metal roofs across Palm Beach Gardens, and we remove, store and reinstall panels while the roof under them is replaced.

Most roofers will not take solar panels off or put them back, so that part of a reroof falls to a solar crew. The rooftop work we do for homes and businesses is listed below.

  • Mounting on tile, shingle and metalRacking and attachments matched to what your roof is made of.
  • Removal and reinstallation for a new roofThe panels, racking and attachments come off before the roof work and go back on once the new roof is down, the trade's "R&R".
  • Storage while the roof is replacedYour panels and racking are kept off the roof until it is ready for them.
  • Flashing at every attachmentEach place a mount meets the roof is flashed and sealed against leaks.
  • Panels and mounts off for goodWhen panels come off before a sale, the mounting comes off with them and the roof is sealed.

Mounting on Tile, Shingle and Metal Roofs

Each roof takes its own attachment: tile roofs need specialized racking, shingle roofs take flashed and sealed attachments, and a standing seam metal roof takes clamps on its seams with no drilling at all.

The roof types we mount on are listed below with how each is attached.

  • Tile

    Specialized racking

The racking here is made for tile, so the panels stay secure above the tiles rather than resting on them.

  • Shingle

    Flashed and sealed

On a shingle roof the panels are mounted with flashing and waterproofing at each attachment to keep water out of the bolt holes.

  • Standing seam metal roof

    Clamps, no drilling

With nothing drilled through the metal, there are no holes to flash and no new path for water into the roof.

  • Flat

    Non-penetrating mounts

A flat roof can carry a "non-penetrating" mounting system, which attaches the panels without making holes in the roof.

Sealed Roof Penetrations

Every roof penetration is flashed and sealed so the array does not cause a leak, since poor installation and missing "flashing", the weatherproofing at each attachment, are the leading causes of roof leaks under solar arrays. That makes the flashing the part of the job we watch closest.

That goes for a first install and for a reinstall alike: when the panels go back on after a reroof, they go onto new flashed mounting feet with stainless hardware.

Solar Panel Removal and Reinstallation for a New Roof

For a new roof, the crew disconnects the system, takes off the panels, racking and attachments, stores them through the roof work, then reinstalls them on new flashed mounts and tests the system before it runs again.

The steps of a removal and reinstallation are listed below in order.

  1. Disconnect

The system is shut down and the solar circuit is disconnected from the main line before a panel is touched.

  2. Removal

We book it before the roof work starts, unbolting each panel and unplugging its wiring so the roofers can begin right away.

  3. Storage

The panels and racking are stored while the roof is replaced, and the solar crew works directly with your roofing contractor to keep the downtime short.

  4. Inspection

A code compliance inspection comes before the system is brought back into service.

  5. Reinstallation

The array goes back onto the new roof on new flashed mounting feet with stainless hardware, never the old holes and old seals.

  6. Testing

The system is reactivated and tested, so you know it is producing again before the crew leaves.

Panel Removal and Reinstallation Cost

Removal and reinstallation is priced by how many panels come off and what the roof is made of, and putting solar on a roof that will need replacing soon adds that cost later.

Across the region, solar panel removal and reinstallation typically runs $1,500 to $3,500 for a whole system, depending on its size and how complex the roof is, or $400 to $500 where it is priced by the panel.

Timing matters as much as the panel count. A rack-mount array on an existing roof costs less upfront and starts producing sooner than roof-integrated solar, and fits best when the roof has years of life left.

More roof and solar questions

A few questions come up on nearly every roof job, and the short answers are here.

Roof-Integrated Solar Shingles and Tiles

"Roof-integrated solar" uses solar shingles or solar tiles installed as part of a full reroof, instead of panels on racking above the roof. It sits lower and looks cleaner, and it comes with one warranty covering both the roof and the energy system; Tesla Solar Roof is one product installed this way.

Solar and Your Roof Warranty

A solar installation can void the roof's warranty, depending on the roof's terms and how the array is attached. Having one contractor responsible for both the roof and the solar means one warranty and no dispute over who is responsible.

Removing Panels Before a Home Sale

If the panels come off before a home sale, the mounting has to come off as well, and every roof penetration it leaves is sealed. The roof is left closed, not dotted with open bolt holes.

Questions we hear

Short answers to what owners ask us before a roof job, and the call is where the details for your house get settled.

Are solar roofs worth the money?

It depends on the roof under the panels: a rack-mount array on an existing roof costs less upfront and starts producing sooner than roof-integrated solar, and it fits best when the roof has years of life left. Roof-integrated solar, laid as part of a full reroof, looks lower and cleaner and carries one warranty for both the roof and the energy system. The full answer on price is in our guide to what solar panels cost.

Why are people getting rid of solar panels?

Often the panels are only coming off for a while: the roof under them needs replacing, and they go back on once the new roof is down. Putting solar on a roof that will need replacing soon adds that later cost of removal and reinstallation. When panels come off for good, such as before a home sale, the mounting has to come off as well and the roof penetrations are sealed.

What is the 33% rule in solar panels?

No rule of thumb replaces a look at your own roof: the cost of solar depends on the system's size, the roof type, your energy usage and what the property needs. A firm quote comes after a site survey of the roof's condition, the electrical service, the equipment and the permitting. Call and we walk through it for your house.
